Having just competed a mortgage application form, an IFA's fact find document, a tax credits form and a contract to buy a new house I have lost the will to live!
On the plus side I now know the post code of my new home by heart, having written it out about 35 times. But why on earth do they need all this information, and long hand at that? My wrist is aching, my head is hurting and my soul is quietly dying.
It has always been my philosophy in life to outsource as much as possible that doesn't give me joy or provide useful challenges. I have someone to do my book-keeping, my invoicing, take my phone calls, clean my house, do the laundry, do my accounts and, occasionally, wash my car.
In fact, this philosophy became the basis of my first book, The Hyper-Creative Personality (this and my new book, The Recipe for Success, are both available on Amazon - new stock of the latter is arriving soon after excessive demand on day of publication. I am not making this up!)
But there are just some things you can't get someone else to do for you. They can help. But they can't do it. Or they could but it would take just as long to explain how to do it as doing it yourself.
And when it comes to form-filling I have a blind-spot. It might be the same kind of response some people have to sitting exams or to spiders. I think about the form for days before making two or three attempts to start it. After that, on the fourth attempt, I do set aside time, turn off my phone, lock myself in a room and do the whole thing from start to finish.
There is a sense of satisfaction at the end but not the same sense of satisfaction you get from doing something tough which is also meaningful or a good fit for you. I don't feel elated. Just relieved.
I am sure many successful people have such blind spots. But is a blind spot for detail a bigger inhibitor to success than, say, a blind spot for people or a blind spot for ideas? If I had to chose, I would choose a form-filling blind spot...but I am open to your thoughts.
