Today I have asked my colleague Mark West to make his contribution to the Let's Be Successful Again blog. I first met Mark when he was on the board at Harrods, the infamous London department store. Now he is Managing Director and founder of PPS Management.

Before diving into tips for being successful I recommend thought is given to what success is. What would it look and feel like. Often we rush off in one direction or another because we have been told if we do this or that we will be successful.
So my first tip is to spend some time thinking about what it is we want success to be. Success can be different for each and every person e.g. achieving a promotion and pay rise at work, fulfilling a lifetime personal dream, being respected by your peers and community. It is therefore important to define what the measure of success will be.
Once we know what it is we want to achieve, we must plan for it. I know this sound’s very much like management theory, but how many times do we head off for a destination we think we know how to get to, only to find that we have gone in the wrong direction. The plan sets out the steps and route to be taken.
Ok, so we now know what we want to achieve and we have a plan for getting there. For me patienceis a very under rated skill. Up until recently we could pretty much have anything we desired, on our terms and when we wanted it. Well life has changed for most of us and now we need to learn to be patient. Remember the cliché about knock backs making you stronger? Well it is true. To be successful one must endure knocks along the way. It is not easy to navigate a clear course across a changing landscape.
That’s why having respect for time is so important. Thanks to modern technologies such as the worldwide web we now live in an instantaneous society that amplifies and make available to the world our successes and failures at the blink of an eyelid. It is therefore important to consider time as a friend. For example: Think about that email reply before pressing send. How will my reply be perceived? Does it say what I want it to say?
Seeking counsel and advice is important too. This does not show weakness rather strength of character. Others views and perceptions can be invaluable. Have and consider the options. Sure, don’t over analyse but allow yourself time to think.
When you have satisfied your innermost doubts and feelings move forward with confidence and above all with passion. Success awaits you!
